Houston rapidly developed shortly after its establishment due to the discovery of oil reserves in the city and today it is one of the largest and most developed cities in the United States. Due to the port located in the city, Houston provides services to many international cargo ships and is home to a significant portion of NASA’s space exploration.

Public transportation in Houston is provided by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, or METRO. Although the city spans a large geographical area, buses provide easy access to almost every region. The METRO light rail system provides convenient transportation throughout the city. Houston also features a lot of bike paths that were put in place to both relieve the city of traffic and as an important social awareness element to prevent environmental pollution and attract attention to a healthy lifestyle.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport is located 37 km from the city center. Also referred to as Houston Airport it serves the Greater Houston area, operating both domestic and international flights. The airport offers several different transportation alternatives to get to the city center, including taxis, rental cars, buses, and shuttle services.  

Taxi

Taxis are a convenient transportation alternative to get to the city center. Airport taxis operate 24 hours a day with tariff surcharges that apply between 8 pm and 6 am. Taxis are accessible from the arrivals level of terminals A, B, C, and E. A taxi from the airport to the city center takes about 30 minutes. Bus

Another transportation alternative to get to the city center from Houston Airport is by bus. METRO bus line 102 provides transportation from the airport to the METRO station downtown, with various stops along the way. The total trip takes about 1.5 hours. The bus stop is located at Terminal C, on the baggage claim level on the south side of the terminal. There are other bus routes that also provide transportation from the airport to other regions in Texas, such as Galveston, Easterwood Airport and Jack Brooks Regional Airport. Shuttle Services

Shuttle services are a great method of transportation to get to the city center from the airport. Houston Airport offers a variety of shuttle services, including courtesy shuttles and hotel shuttles. Shuttles depart from the arrivals level of Terminals A, B, C, and E. To access these shuttles follow the signs that read ‘Ground Transportation’ to the exit and from there follow the signs that read “Hotel Shuttles” and “Parking Shuttles”. Rental Car

Renting a car is a great way to get to the city center from Houston Airport. It is also a comfortable option for getting around in the city during your trip. Rental car companies are located at the Rental Car Center, just 5 minutes away from the airport terminals. Shuttles provide transportation from the terminals to the Rental Car Center, just follow the signs that read “Rental Car”. The shuttles to the Rental Car Center are blue and white. Rental car companies that you can choose from include Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty.
